Churches and religious organizations often have a reputation for being places of safety and sanctuary. However, recent history tells a somewhat different story. Since the 2000s, the Catholic Church has been plagued by thousands of sexual abuse allegations involving high-ranking priests. This series of scandals has pushed the public to recognize some of the dangers of trusting religious organizations blindly—and has encouraged religious organizations to screen their employees more vigilantly.
