Do I need to ask volunteers for release form to run a background check?

Yes, this is recommend and nearly always required. The FCRA requires that you to obtain an individual’s written authorization (typically through some kind of release form) before requesting a background check about the individual for “employment purposes” (which may include individual contractors and includes employment actions other than hiring). Read more about FCRA compliance in our support section.

The FCRA recognizes various legitimate purposes, including employment, resale, misconduct investigation, other FCRA and non FCRA. Depending on the purpose, requirements may vary, including those that pertain to receiving authorization and making disclosures.
