Alabama Governor Signs Law Requiring All Businesses to Begin Using E-Verify

On June 9, 2011, Alabama Governor Bentley signed HB 56, which is similar to Arizona's immigration legislation.

The law requires government contractors and subcontractors to use E-Verify effective January 1, 2012. All employers are required to use E-Verify no later than April 1, 2012.

Penalties for violations include probation, the loss of business license for the offending location, and ultimately the loss of business license for all locations throughout the state.
