Teachers Unions Take Issue with New Bill That Fights Against Criminals and Sex Offenders in Schools

Background checks grabbed national headlines this week, as Wall Street Journal columnist Campbell Brown revealed numerous instances where teachers unions had sought to weaken a new bill that would fight to keep sex offenders and other dangerous criminals out of schoolrooms across the country.

College in Texas to Delay Implementation of New Background Check Law

This spring, the Texas legislature passed a new law permitting state-funded colleges and universities to conduct criminal background checks on all students wishing to live in on-campus housing. Now, with the fall semester fast approaching, institutions of higher learning are weighing the pros and cons of exercising their newly granted option of conducting these background checks.

What Took So Long for University Faculty Background Checks?

While it is a good thing that background checks for faculty members seem to have arrived, it is a good question to ask why they actually took as long as they did. In a move that should have arrived a long time ago, Duke University in North Carolina will soon require that people looking to become part of their faculty take mandatory criminal checks. It was reported recently that the administration department at the university is looking into getting security checks for current members of the faculty as well, which is the same type of test given to new hires ever since the year 1980.
