Do I need a social security number to run a background check on a volunteer?

No, it is not necessary, but we do recommend you use the most personally identifiable information available to start your search, like first name, middle names and last name, full date of birth and social security number. Criminal records are NOT identified by social security number, but other sources of information used in the criminal check usually do.

Certain products we offer like the US OneSEARCH instant criminal database search do not require a social security number, while others like the US AliasSEARCH check relies on the social security number to retrieve the subject’s address history and uncover possible alias names.

Because of the commonality of certain names, we might request additional identifiable information like social security number to reduce false positives and to increase the chance that we have a positive match against your search.
